- Text from catalogue of the Hull Grundy Gift (Gere et al 1984) no 907:
Another cameo by Luigi Rosi in the Milton Weil collection, Metropolitan Museum, New York (Kris 1932a, fig.95) is similarly inscribed but with a different address, i.e. Roma, Via Rasella no.143; Rosi is recorded at this address in 1867. A belt of damascened steel made by Cortelazzo of Vicenza, c.1871, is set with cameos by Luigi Rosi (see Bury 1982, p.129; Case 20, Board K, no.6) (Charlotte Gere)
Information supplementary to Dalton 1915:
For a closely similar cameo head signed and dated 1870 by Filippo Tignani, see sale catalogue, Bertolami, 'Antiquities, Glyptics & Medieval Art, London 19 April 2018, lot 343. The image is after an intaglio by Charles Brown, see Lucia Pirzio Biroli Stefanelli, 'La Collezione Paoletti vol. 2, impression MR 28000, n.273; see also Raspe 1791, no. 9198, for a glass cast by Tassie. Both Rosi and Tignani probably copied the head from a set of casts such as those by Paoletti.
For further cameos by Rosi, see Christie's London 10 April 1991, lot 25 and Sotheby's Geneva 21 November 1991, lot 101 (the same head of a bearded man in gem-set mount); Christie's London, 14 October 1992, lot 54; Sotheby's New York, 13-14 April 1994, lot 4.
