- Curator's comments
- A closely similar gold medallion in the Department of Coins & Medals (1994,0915.735) bears a Russian inscription and is described as 'Distributed among the Smyrniotes by Grand Duke Constantine in 1859'.
Similar pendants are also found in Montenegro as ex-votos, see Piero Pazzi, 'Gioielli di Perasto, Dobrota, Scagliari e Perzagno nelle Bocche di Cattaro (secoli XVI-XIX). Tesori de Montenegro III', Venice 2010, p. 35, no. 522 (ill. p.194, as no. 527), a gilt brass version with an inscribed metal ribbon scroll at the top recording that the pendant was a votive gift to the Santuario della Madonna dello Scarpello, Perasto, Cattaro (Kotor in Serbian) by Lodovicus Schulz, 1883; it is described as made in Austria.
