Made by T. Gibson
Duns, Borders, Scotland, 1884 ?.(1)
Movement of a lever watch.
Signature: Inscribed 'DUNS' on the barrel bridge and 'T. Gibson, 38820' on the back plate.
Dial and hands: Missing.
Dust-cap: Missing.
Movement:
Ebauche Marks: 12 4 M x M
Frame: Gilded full-plate movement, the back plate supported by four turned pillars and already pinned. The balance cock is engraved all over with foliate scrolls. A separate barrel bridge on the back plate and a separate bridge on the front plate for the third wheel and fourth pinion. On the inside of the front plate is a potence with a straight moulded foot. The hinge piece is fitted as are the following:- barrel ratchet and spring, the case catch and spring. The pivot holes are all finished and the banking pins for the lever are present.
Jewelling: There was originally a screwed-in jewel setting in the balance cock but now only one retaining screw remains. The potence is jewelled with a ruby endstone in a wedge.
Means of Regulation: A Bosley regulator registered against a divided scale inscribed 'SLOW' and 'FAST' on the back plate. All the components are now missing.
Winding System: Key wound.
Dimensions: diameter 41.1 mm, height 11.3 mm, pillar height 3.9 mm.
Provenance: Bequeathed by Mr. W. Gibson in 1978 to the Antiquarian Society who then donated it to the British Museum.
Notes:
(1) Duns is near to Berwick on Tweed.
This appears to be a completed watch from which most of the components have subsequently been removed rather than an unfinished ebauche. A Henry Gibson is recorded in 'Old Scottish Clockmakers' in Berwick on Tweed in 1844 and a Thomas Gibson, 26, Hyde Hill, Berwick on Tweed 1837.
See Cat. no. 339 (registration no. 1978,0507.1) for a watch by George Gibson of Duns.
