bow brooch
Object Type
bow brooch
Museum number
1970,0406.979
Description
Leaded gunmetal bow brooch, 'Howletts' type with knob-ended upturned foot. Cast with cast faceted and ribbed decoration and punched dots on head plate; the pin and spring are of (leaded) copper alloy and there are two decorative knob-shaped terminals on either side of the spring which appear to have been attached with an iron pin; there is no iron remaining but there are traces of rust along the centre of the spring and in the holes of these terminals; the replacement of textile here also suggests that iron was present. The large flat ring is attached to the front of the brooch by a piece of copper-alloy wire drawn through a hole in the back of the brooch, forming a loop in front and bent back on the other side; ?textile traces.
