OVAL GILT-BRASS CASED VERGE WATCH WITH ALARM.
Oval gilt-brass plates with five baluster pillars. There are two separate bridges on the pillar-plate for the recessed wheels. Engraved decoration around the verge aperture. Riveted potence and screwed-on counter-potence.
MAINSPRING & SET-UP
Gilt-brass barrel with dovetailed cap and riveted steel hook. Ratchet and click set-up with an elaborately pierced and engraved balance-cock.
FUSEE & STOP-WORK
Gilt-brass fusee for gut line and with standard stop-work.
Three wheel train of gilt-brass wheels, the recessed second wheel and contrate pinion run in a separate bridge on the pillar-plate. The train has been altered by the addition of a cock to provide bearing for the second wheel which now has a very short arbor. A fourth wheel has also been added, driven by the contrate and running between a rear cock and a hole in the lower end of the shortened verge potence.
ESCAPEMENT & BALANCE
Verge escapement, the crown wheel verge, balance and balance spring are all replacements added when the watch was converted to balance-spring.
Screwed-on balance cock, the original square steady stud now filed off and the hole in the potence-plate now plugged.
Powered by a fixed barrel pierced an engraved with foliate scrolls on the visible side. The geared stop-work on the potence-plate replaces the original. Train of solid gilt-brass wheels, the second wheel and contrate pinion recessed in the pillar-plate and running in a separate bridge. Steel crown wheel running between a riveted potence and a screwed-on counter potence. Steel verge with a semi-circular hammer.
The motion work has been altered to give a present duration of 30 hours.
DIAL & HAND
Plain gilt-brass dial with three lugs, one latched for attaching the movement. Applied silver chapter ring with Roman hours I-XII and arrow-head half-hour marks between two circles. In the centre an gilt-brass alarm setting hand engraved 1-11 with a steel pointer at 12 to show the time. Steel alarm setting hand.
Gilt-brass case with plain back and hinged lid, the hinge block engraved with a winged cherub's head. Band pierced and engraved with foliate scrolls. On the inside of the hinged lid a wreath enclosing the initials FB, the latter cut through the gilding. Large cast gilt-brass foliate pendant with loose ring. Turned gilt-brass finial. Inside the back an oval bell screwed to a central square boss. With the watch a leather-covered wooden outer box with brass hinge and silver closing hook. A hole at top and bottom for pendant and finial.
