- Curator's comments
- The case and dial of this watch are not of 17th century date. The movement plates, pillars, barrel, fusee and train wheels appear to be original. Of the escapement, the crown wheel is possibly original but the verge and balance have been replaced and the potence modified. Also the balance-cock is of modern manufacture, the original most likely to have been a short scroll shaped cock of the type normally found on watches with hog's bristle regulation. The present regulator is not original but replaces one of similar, if lighter, construction. JL suggests that these 19th-20th century cases derive from the discovery in Switzerland of a large mass of smokey quartz or Berol? as it was called [see Encyclopaedia Britannica]. See also Museo Poldi Pezzoli where another watch inscribed NR also bears an inscription relating to the repair/reconstruction by Percy Webster. See CAI.2311 for similar NR inscription
