OVAL SILVER CASED VERGE WATCH IN THE FORM OF A SHELL.
Oval gilt-brass plates with four solid Egyptian pillars, engraved on the visible side. Potence-hole in the pillar-plate. The perimeter of the potence-plate is engraved with a series of foliate motifs without a defined border.
MAINSPRING & SET-UP:
Gilt-brass barrel with dovetailed cap and riveted steel hook. Tangent-screw set-up with two brass brackets for the worm gear.
FUSEE & STOP-WORK:
Gilt-brass fusee for gut-line with English stop-work.
Gilt-brass three wheel train, the second and contrate wheels with three crossings.
ESCAPEMENT & BALANCE:
Verge escapement, the crown wheel runs between a riveted potence with engraved decoration on the visible side, and a riveted counter-potence. Verge with steel 2-arm balance. Pierced and engraved foliate balance cock pinned to a stud on the potence-plate.
DIAL & HAND:
Silver dial, engraved around the outside with scrolling foliage. Engraved chapter-ring with Roman hours I-XII, and arrow-head half-hour marks surrounding a quarter-circle. Within the chapter-ring is an engraved landscape with buildings in the background and trees in the foreground..
Oval fluted silver case in the form of a shell with raised flutes radiating from the pendant area. The winding hole cover on the back is also in the form of a small shell. Cast, shaped silver pendant with loose ring. Very small silver finial. plain silver bezel, split and glazed.

- The bezel is not original. The flutes in the case design are not carried over onto the bezel which they were originally. The plain silver bezel could well have been added in the 17th century when the new glazed bezels became popular.
