- Curator's comments
- The design of this clock is based on an original patent of 9th October 1883 (no.286531) awarded to Adler Christian Clausen and J. C. Slafter of Minneapolis in America. The original clocks were made by the New Haven Clock Company, using the Jerome & Company name, for about one year between 1884 and 1885. It would seem that they were not popular as production was so limited. In later years clocks of this design were made in both France and in the 20th century in Germany for the Horolovar Clock Company in America. These more recent clocks were called 'Ignatz' clocks. The French examples are characterised by ebonised cases and often a seated cherum figure beneath the umbrella.
