Figure of a 'Pagode'; porcelain; man seated on plinth, holding monkey and ball; painted in colours; long moustache; manganese purple hat, red suit with fine white flower pattern and yellow trim, blue shoes; seated on rectangular cushion with tassel at each corner; rectangular, stepped plinth with shaped sides and truncated corners; hollow underneath with crossed swords mark on inside in underglaze blue; gilded piping and detail.

- This figure and its pair (1948,1203.63) represent imaginary chinoiserie figures wearing Oriental style costume. They were known as Pagoda figures or 'Pagodes' in France and 'Pagoten' in Germany and are mentioned in the Arbeitsbericht (work reports) of the sculptor Johann Friedrich Eberlein in December 1735: 'Ein Pagotte mit einem Affen von Dohne[Thon] boßiret (a pagoda with a monkey formed in clay) (Menzhausen, 1993, cat.. no. 93).
