- Description
-
Silver flanged bowl, hemispherical in profile, with an integrated flared foot-ring; below the upstand (the vertical rim on which the cover (1946,1007.12) sits, there is a wide hooked flanged. In the centre of the base is a foliate motif inside a wave crest border, with 16 crests running clockwise, but with one facing the other way. This encloses an eight-leafed foliate motif. The flange is edged with bead-and-reel moulding and on its upper surface is an incised continuous geometric vine-scroll pattern. This is enclosed by two lines of wave that alternate in direction, the inner scrolling clockwise, the outer anti-clockwise. The designs have all been infilled with niello, only parts of which survive.
