Curator's comments
Text from J. Rudoe, 'Decorative Arts 1850-1950. A catalogue of the British Museum collection'. 2nd ed. no.189. For a full discussion of the Martin Brothers see Decorative Arts 1850-1950', Cat no 158, 1945.0204.4. This group is mostly decorated in low relief built up with slips and then incised. Designs with fish and sea creatures predominate in the firm's work of the late 1890s and early 1900s. The two matt-finish high-relief pieces ('Decorative Arts 1850-1950', Cat. 191 - 2) are unusual.
