- Description

Gold snuff-box, rectangular form with band of conventional floral and foliate ornament round the sides, on lid and on base. On the lid is the monogram LP with crown above for Louis Philippe, all in diamonds set in silver. At each corner is a large diamond in a silver collet setting. Goldsmith's marks inside. Contained in the original tooled and gilded leather box with crowned monogram.

- Condition
- Taken apart by Ian McIntyre, Conservation Department, in April 1998, to remove old cleaning materials beneath the surface which were causing tarnish. The lid comprises an upper plaque with the diamond monogram, below this a paper rectangle of wadding and below that a thin gold lining plaque with an inscription scatched on the inner surface: 'Mr Moignan'. The reverse of the upper plaque shows the setting for the corner diamonds: a fringe of claws turned back over a thin circle of wire to secure the setting. The chasing of the border is aslo visible on the underside. The central part is separate, held in by steel pins and pierced to take the settings of the deeper stones in the monogram, which had to be let in to bring down the surface to an even level.
