- The stiff style of flower painting on this mug ('Walzenkrug'), moulded in relief with a design of trellis or lattice ('Korbflechtrelief'), is identified as woodcut flowers ( 'Holzschnitt Blumen'). The large insects are made more three-dimensional with a fine pale grey outline to create shadows ('ombriert'). It is thought the design source was German woodcuts or wood engravings.
The silver mounts were probably made by Johann Michael Wecker (see Rosenberg, Der Goldschmiede Merkzeichen, 1923, Nr. 1774, p.37) in Dresden; Wecker was active between 1716 and 1743/1749. The cover has a chased band of late baroque strapwork and in the centre is a coat of arms envelopped within an ermine cloak forming a canopy. The crest is of a horse in full gallop on his back a knight in complete armour holding a sword, beneath is the Latin motto 'Fortis et Fidelis' (Brave and Faithful).
A similar tankard, but with different silver mounts, was sold at Kunstauktionshaus Schlosser, Bamberg, Germany, 2 July 2011, lot 32.
