- Description
-
Bronze strap-end. The upper face is broken away at the split end and the single rivet-hole in the lower portion appears to be secondary; traces of two rivet-holes may perhaps be seen in the smoothed-off break. The end of the central panel is missing. The panel contains an indistinct, carved, zoomorphic, interlace pattern. The double lateral border and the interlace ornament are inlaid with niello. The terminal takes the shape of a formalised animal head with faceted snout and oval ears with half-moon openings. On the forehead is engraved a double-contoured lozenge. The back is plain but much corroded.

Found 'quite near' two bone pins and a bone comb - the association, however, is probably of little value. The pins and the comb were given to the Museum at the same time.
Ninth century.
