- Curator's comments
- This male figure is part of a pair, identified as 'The Alpine Shepherds', (for the Shepherdess, see 1936,0715.16), both are model number 389. The pair are only described as 'Pair of figures' by the collector William Bemrose in 1898 and not at all in J. Haslem's, The Old Derby China factory, 1876. Bradshaw has identified the print source as a stipple engraving titled 'The Shepherdess of the Alps' after a painting by Angelica Kauffmann, engraved by Francesco Bartolozzi and published by William Dickinson on February 20th, 1785. For a 1794 version of the image, see P&D 1876,0708.2564. Pair with 1936,0715.16. Though in the print source the shepherd is seated.
