Curator's comments
From possible Roman ship wreck or lost cargo of second century AD Samian pottery from the Thames Estuary at Pudding Pan, Pan Sands , Pan Rock (various names for the same area) north of Herne Bay, north Kent. A large quantity of Samian pottery has been recovered from this site by fishermen and entered collections since the 18th Century. This Museum has one of the largest collections of Samian from the site, and played a role in two investigations to locate the source of the pottery in the early 20th and early 21st Centuries.
