- Curator's comments
- The badge has been altered at a later date. The cameo may be late 17th century and the back plate corresponds to late 17th century examples in the Royal Collection. But one would normally expect an enamelled depiction of St George and the Dragon in the centre, rather than the gold plate now inserted. The use of cabochon carbuncle garnets is typical of the middle years of the 19th century (they would not occur in the 17th century) and their heavy silver setting suggests a date around 1840. The cut down setting of the cameo also appears to be 19th century. (comments made by Stepehn Patterson, Royal Collection, 19 December 2000). The garnets identified by Nigel Israel and Chris Cavey, 19 May 2005.
