- Curator's comments
- Manning 1985
The Accession Register records that it was found in association with other Roman material in 1884.
The type is not common in Britain, although one comes from Verulamium (Manning 1972, 164, no. 7); but is more frequently found in Germany, for example at Cannstatt ('O.R.L.' BV1, Kastell 59 (1914), 30, Taf. IX, 9), Stockstadt ('O.R.L.' Bill, Kastell 33 (1914), 55, Taf. IX, 67), Zugmantel ('O.R.L.' BIII, Kastell 8 (1937), 101, Taf. XVI, 1), Feldberg ('O.R.L.' BIII, Kastell 10 (1937), 35, Taf. IX, 28), and Heilbronn-Böckingen (Schönberger 1967, 142, Abb. 10, 2). Petrie (1917, pl. IX, 29) figures an example from Pompeii.
