- Curator's comments
- It was probably cast from a rock cystal plaque in the Vatican which was originally mounted with oval reliefs of Christ carrying the Cross and The Entombment in the base of a rock cystal crucifx. The crucifix is generally identified as that for which Valerio Belli received a payment of 1111 gold ducats in 1525. A preliminary drawing for the Betrayal of Christ by Polidoro da Caravaggio is in the Royal Collection at Windsor Castle (RCIN 990050).
