Description
Bulb-vases with covers, pair, jasper, coloured blue, each with a detachable lid fitting on to a ledge inside the vase. Applied leaves decorating the lower part of the body and the foot conceal the join of the two parts. The top imitates rockery and is ornamented with applied flowers in white jasper ware. Three bulb holders fit into three shaped holes in the lid. The body is decorated with applied moulded reliefs of the Muses: on one side from left to right are Euterpe, with her double flute (lyric poetry), Clio holding a scroll (history) and Erato shown with a lyre (erotic poetry and mime); and on the other are Polyhymnia shown in a pensive attitude (sublime hymn), Terpischore with a lyre (dance and song) and Calliope with a tablet (epic poetry). Marked.
