- Curator's comments
- From a series of the Nine Muses, in which contemporary musical instruments are represented in great detail and with accuracy. The complete set was in Basilius Amerbach's cabinet in Basle before 1587. It was used by goldsmiths's shops, as in the English Vintners's Company salt (marked for London 1569-70). Exhibited in Northern Renaissance medals and plaquettes, BM June -October 1995, no.53.
