- Curator's comments
- The battles and heroes identified around the sides and base of this snuff-box, commemorate Britain’s Annus Mirabilis, the year 1759, in the middle of the Seven Years War English (1756-1763). The names on the sides are 'Hawke' for Admiral Edward Hawke, 1st Baron Hawke (1705-1781), who was in command at the Battle of Quiberon Bay (France), on 20 November 1759: 'Boscawen' for Admiral Edward Boscawen (1711-1761), in command at Lagos (Portugal) pm 18 August 1759; 'Minden' for the Battle of Minden (Germany) on 1 August 1759 and 'Quebec' for the battle of Quebec (Canada) on 18 September 1759. The base has 'Long Live the King' a reference to George II. The battle scene on the cover is historical and not contemporary.
