OVAL, GILT-BRASS CASED VERGE WATCH.
:
CASE
Oval gilt-brass case with integral back and hinged lid. The back has a border of scrolling foliage with a rabbit at the top. The rotating winding-hole cover is engraved as a rose. Gilt-brass band with upper and lower mouldings which formerly enclosed an applied band, probably of silver and engraved with foliate scrolls etc. the lid has a border similar to that on the back. In the middle is an engraved rose and the hinge block is engraved with a winged cherub's head. The lid closing lug is engraved with a fan motif. Cast gilt-brass pendant with loose ring. Finial now missing. The inside of the lid is engraved with a wreath.

DIAL
Gilt-brass dial-plate with four lugs around the edge to locate in the case band. An undercut recess for the hinge-block on the pillar-plate and a single dial foot attach the dial to the pillar-plate. The dial-plate is engraved with a wide border of scrolling foliage with a bird at the top and two grotesques at the bottom. In the middle the riveted-on silver dial has Roman hours I-XII and star-shaped half-hour marks between two circles, the inner with dots at the hours. the central area is engraved with a scene showing a sailing boat passing before a castle ? Single blued-steel hand.

MOVEMENT
FRAME: Oval gilt-brass plates with four baluster pillars. Potence-hole in the pillar-plate. The pillar-plate is cut away to provide a recess for the case catch. Engraved foliate border around the potence-plate and engraved decoration around the verge aperture. Riveted potence and riveted counter-potence.

MAINSPRING & SET-UP: Gilt-brass barrel with a flange at the top and bottom. Dovetailed cap and riveted steel hook. Large central boss on the base. Two holes for gut-line attachment. Ratchet and click set-up with a steel click and spring, the wheel now missing.

FUSEE & STOP-WORK: Gilt-brass fusee for gut-line with standard stop-work. :
TRAIN: Three wheel train of gilt-brass wheels, the second and contrate wheels with three crossings.

ESCAPEMENT & BALANCE: Verge escapement, the crown wheel possibly replaced. The verge is missing and the modern balance is fixed to a brass taper-pin. Pierced and engraved foliate balance cock pinned to a stud on the potence-plate. Part of the cock foot is now missing.

MOTION WORK: A pinion of report cut into the extended great wheel arbor drives a brass dial wheel.
