This type of handle, which would probably have been capped by a mushroom-shaped wooden head, is used on other tools including carpenter's paring chisels (e.g. registration no. 1934,1210.65). Awls of similar form come from London (stamped with the maker's name TITVLI) (Wheeler 1946, 76, pl. XXXII, 10), Rheingönheim (Ulbert 1969, 53, Taf. 48, 14), and Aislingen (Ulbert 1959, 96, Taf. 27, 33-5).
