The scene on the lid based on the pediment over the West front of St Paul's Cathedral which encloses a sculpture depicting the Conversion of Saul (known as Paul after his conversion) as described in Acts Ch.IX and was the work of Francis Bird, under the supervision of Sir Christopher Wren.
