SILVER AND TORTOISE-SHELL PAIR CASED-COACH WATCH WITH HOUR-STRIKING AND ALARM.
Circular gilt-brass plates with five baluster pillars. Riveted potence and screwed-on counter-potence, the latter replaced. Engraved decoration around the verge aperture. Three separate bridges over recesses in the pillar-plate. :
MAINSPRING & SET-UP:
Gilt-brass barrel with snap-in cap and riveted steel hook. Tangent-screw set-up mounted on the potence-plate.
FUSEE & STOP-WORK:
Gilt-brass fusee with chain and English stop-work, the spring replaced.
Three wheel train, the second wheel and contrate pinion recessed in the pillar-plate and running in a separate bridge. The second and contrate wheels each have three crossings.
ESCAPEMENT & BALANCE:
Verge escapement with all the components replaced. Steel 3-arm balance with spiral balance spring and geared regulator. Later balance cock pierced and engraved with foliate scrolls.
Count-wheel striking, for hours only, powered by a fixed barrel with engraved floral decoration on the visible side and geared stop-work mounted on the potence-plate, the pinion now missing. Six wheel train of solid wheels, the fourth wheel recessed in the pillar-plate and running in a separate bridge. the sixth pinion and roller are missing. Count-wheel control, the silver count wheel engraved 1-12 around a central rosette. warned release with two pierced steel gates unlocked by a 12-point star wheel mounted on the dial wheel.
Gilt-brass barrel with geared stop-work mounted on the potence-plate. Three wheel train with a gilt-brass great wheel, a solid steel second wheel recessed into the pillar-plate and running in a separate bridge and a brass contrate wheel with a steel rim. Brass crown wheel with steel rim running between a scroll-shaped riveted potence and a screwed-on counter-potence. Semi-circular hammer mounted on a steel verge. The alarm is released by a cam running on the dial wheel.
DIAL & HANDS:
Gilt-brass dial-plate with engraved border, pinned to the pillar-plate. On top of the dial plate is a thin brass shim with four holes for the dial feet. Pinned-on silver champlevé chapter-ring with raised Roman hours I-XII and lozenge-shaped half-hour marks surrounding a quarter-circle with dots at the hours, lines at the quarters and crosses at the half-hours. In the centre a revolving silver champlevé disc with raised Arabic numerals 1-12 for alarm setting, around a central area decorated with foliate scrolls. A steel pointer at 12 indicates the time. The central hand for alarm setting is now missing.
Silver inner case, with hinged bezel engraved with a gadroon border and split and glazed. Case-band pierced and engraved with scrolling foliage. Within a wheatear border, the plain back is centred with a rosette and has three winding holes marked W S and L. The upper case-band has a separate pinned-on ring engraved with a rope-twist design.
Tortoise-shell covered brass outer case with silver rims and silver piqué decoration. The band and bezel are pierced with silver rimmed roundels the back has a floral design in the centre. With two white watch-papers with printed inscriptions on obverse.
