Upper surface Horizontal sundial, with folding shaped and engraved gnomon for latitude 49° and azimuth scale 0°-180°, clockwise from west. The compass set for declination N10°E, but needle and cover-glass missing. The Roman hours engraved on a scroll. The two clips are probably later additions. This face signed: 'Iohann Melchior Landeck Fecit Nürnberg'.
Under surface Pedometer, operated by a pull-rod now missing. The scales show through apertures in a brass disc. Outermost scale reads 0-100 double paces, numbered every five; the inner scale, hundreds of double paces numbered at every 1,000 up to 14,000 for a complete revolution. The 140:1 gearing is in two stages, 10-1 and 14-1. A further figure shows through an aperture: this is increased by one unit up to 20, by a pin and rachet wheel, for every 14,000 double paces, ie 14 miles. Two gilt-brass indexes, one pierced. Also engraved on this face is a clinometer scale 45°-0°-45°.
