SILVER CASED VERGE WATCH WITH ALARM.
:
CASE:
Silver case with hinged lid, split and glazed. The back and band are pierced and engraved with realistic flowers with a gadroon border around the rim. The bezel is similarly decorated but not pierced. Silver pendant with loose ring. Inside the case a bell.
There is no provision for a case-catch, the movement and dial being lifted from the case by a protruding lug at VI o'clock. Dial hinged to case at XII.
DIAL:
Gilt-brass pinned-on dial with four lugs around the perimeter to engage in recesses in the case band. Within an engraved gadroon border the applied silver chapter-ring is engraved with Roman hours I-XII and star-shaped half-hour marks. In the centre a revolving gilt-brass disc engraved 1-11 and with a steel pointer at 12 to show the time. The middle of the disc engraved with realistic flowers. Central steel hand for alarm-setting.

MOVEMENT
FRAME:
Circular gilt-brass plates with four baluster pillars. Riveted potence and riveted counter-potence. Separate bridges on the dial side of the pillar-plate for the recessed second wheels and third pinions of the going and alarm trains.

MAINSPRING & SET-UP:
Gilt-brass barrel with riveted cap and riveted steel hook. Ratchet and click set-up. the gilt-brass click elaborately pierced and engraved with scrolling foliate designs. The mainspring now missing.

FUSEE & STOP-WORK:
Gilt-brass fusee with chain and standard stop-work, the spring replaced.

TRAIN:
Four wheel going-train of gilt-brass wheels, the second, third and contrate wheels with three crossings. the second wheel and third pinion recessed into the pillar-plate.

ESCAPEMENT & BALANCE:
Verge escapement, the verge and brass balance not original. Screwed-on balance cock, pierced and engraved with foliate scrolls.

ALARM TRAIN:
Gilt-brass fixed barrel, pierced and engraved with foliate scrolls on the visible side. Geared stop-work wheel and pinion mounted on the potence-plate. Three wheel train, great wheel and solid second wheel of gilt-brass, the solid contrate wheel of steel. The second wheel and contrate pinion are recessed into the pillar-plate. The solid steel crown wheel runs between a riveted potence and a screwed-on counter-potence. Steel verge with semi-circular hammer.
