RECTANGULAR SILVER CASED VERGE WATCH IN THE FORM OF A BOOK.
Rectangular gilt-brass plates with four baluster pillars. There is a hole in the pillar-plate for the potence. Engraved decoration around the verge aperture. A separate bridge on the pillar-plate for the recessed train wheels.
MAINSPRING & SET-UP:
Gilt-brass barrel with snap-in cap and riveted steel hook. Tangent screw set-up mounted on the potence-plate, the worm gear between two cut blued-steel scrolling brackets. Index disc and indicator now missing.
FUSEE & STOP-WORK:
Gilt-brass fusee with chain (originally gut-line) and English stop-work, the stop iron now missing.
Four wheel going train with the second wheel and third pinion recessed into the pillar-plate and running an a separate bridge.
Verge escapement, the crown wheel runs between a riveted potence and a screwed-on counter-potence. the verge, balance and balance cock are all replacements.
Silver dial with scrolled arabesque engraved decoration. Engraved chapter ring with Roman hours I-XII, half-hour marks and a quarter circle. Gilt-brass hand, the tail bent. There is no case catch, the dial is hinged to the case on the left-hand side. Four lugs protrude from the edge of the pillar-plate to rest in recesses in the top edge of the case band.
Rectangular silver case in the form of a book, the hinged lid and integral back engraved with arabesque ornament. The band is engraved to resemble the closed pages of the book. The lid is closed by a latch on the side. Silver pendant with loose ring.
