- This small leaf-shaped dish for pickles, condiments or sauces, was inspired by a Chinese white ware dish made in the Dehua kilns though it may have been used as a scholar's brush washer. The shape with its branch handle and three feet formed from a flowering twig, was copied at Meissen in stoneware and porcelain from the Böttger period, c. 1715. The pattern of a red dragon is after a Meissen design known as the 'Rotem Drachen' based on a Japanese original, which was reserved for court table wares from 1734 (see reg. no. Franks.34). It suggests that a Meissen model was in London and copied at Chelsea or was made as a replacement for a damaged or missing object.
