- This small trinket was designed as a fob-seal with a metal suspension loop to hang from a watch chain (fob) or an 'equipage', later known as a 'chatelaine', it is mounted with an engraved hardstone matrix to use as a seal to enclose letters.
This fob-seal and others from the 1887 gift from Sir A. W. Franks, may be among those included in a Christie’s, London sale, property of a gentleman, held on 11 March 1878, lots 133 & 134, ‘Seven white Chelsea seals and 11 coloured, some of them mounted’, sold for £3 3 0 and bought by 'Wareham'. William Wareham was a curios dealer at 14–15 Castle Street, Leicester Square from whom Franks acquired objects.
