Seal; intaglio; black basalt stoneware; oval; head to left of Hannibal, wearing an elaborate helmet with plume, bearded, a small horse in the distance beside a palm tree; reverse, domed, maker's mark and model number.

- The source of this image is a gem listed in the Tassie and Raspe catalogue of 1791, as model number 9593, described as 'Root of Emerald (Lipp. I.301). A bust of Hanno, resembling the preceding number, in an helmet with a horse and a palm tree; symbols that were common on the Carthaginian medals.'
The model is listed in the Wedgwood and Bentley catalogue of 1779 as '197 Hannibal --- head.', and in the Wedgwood catalogue of 1787 as '197 Hannibal', under Class I, Section II, 'Antique Subjects', but not as such in the 1773 Wedgwood and Bentley catalogue.
