Back-plate, of steel, with a narrow flange at the waist and a broad, flat neck. The main edges have plain, inward turns, at either shoulder is a pair of rivet holes for a shoulder strap, at either side of the waist is a pair of holes for the waist strap. The object is embossed with three narrow bands, flaring from the waist, originally intended to be bright; the ground was originally intended to be black from the hammer. Stamped at the neck is the guild mark of Nuremberg and an almost completely obliterated mark of the armourer, Hans Michel. The exterior is bright but patinated and stained, the interior, black and laminating.
