- Curator's comments
This dish shows an idealized woman's face in profile, in the manner of an ancient Roman coin or contemporary sixteenth century medal. Her tightly bound hair, high forehead and long, white neck accord with contemporary ideals of beauty and fashion. This is probably not a portrait, though the inscription may be intended to strengthen the image as a tribute to a real woman, named Lucia. Dishes of this kind were given as gifts to contemporary women.
