Deep plate of earthenware covered front and back with presumed tin glaze. Painted on the front with the Death of the Virgin: the Virgin Mary in a canopied bed surrounded by the twelve Apostles. After Israel von Meckenem after Martin Schongauer. Edge painted orange. On the reverse 'acanthus' ornament near the rim and within this a band of scale pattern.

The image on this dish derives from a print by Israhel van Meckenem (P&D registration no. 1845,0809.330) which was a copy in reverse of an original print by Martin Schongauer (P&D registration no. 1895,0809.330).
