- Curator's comments
- This style of rock art exhibiting a motif of grouped 'cups' within a 'ring' is particular to Northern England, primarily Northumberland and North Yorkshire. Stylistically, it looks nearly identical to the smaller piece of rock art (1876,0402.4) from Wass Moor, North Yorkshire.
BM Register - 2nd April 1876, presentation of various carved rock from barrow excavations by Rev. William Greenwell. Greenwell mentions in multiple publications the excavation of rock art in connection to his barrow excavations (e.g. rock art reused in burial sites), most noteably in his British Barrows book (1877), the likely source for the rock art collection he donated to the BM in April 1876.

- Acquisition notes
- There is a strong possibility that this object is associated with the collection of large rock art donated to museum by Rev. William Greenwell, 2nd April 1876, as recorded in the BM Register. This slab of rock art looks nearly identical in style to 1876,0402.4 from Wass Moor, North Yorkshire, indicating that it may have derived from the same site. This object may have not been registered at the time possibly due to its large size making it difficult to put on display, as the other pieces of rock art have been attached to plinths. This object has been registered retrospectively, 15th July 2021 for display in the upcoming BM Stonehenge Exhibition (Feb-July 2022).
