TSC notes that this is probably the seal of the jurisdiction of La Marche-su-Saone, the ancient lordship of the families of Pontailler, Grantson, Vienne, and La Beaumer Montreuel. This important barony was responsible to the king, its lord had the right of appointing an authentic notary. From 1286 the inhabitants of La Marche had the priviledge of having a mayor, formerly called a 'prud homme' and four echevins.
