- Description
-
A chasse-shaped pilgrim ampulla with the neck of the vessel emerging vertically from the centre. Scenes representing the martyrdom of Becket are represented on the longer sides, with figures on the gabled ends. Two equal-armed crosses, now folded inwards, protrude from diagonally opposing corners of the chasse-shaped portion. The neck of the ampulla is decorated with linear ornament forming triangles and is supported by two metal arms. It is made of lead alloy and has been considerably flattened, making the decoration indistinct. This piece is associated with the shrine of St Thomas Becket at Canterbury.
