SILVER AND NIELLO CASED VERGE WATCH IN THE FORM OF A FRITILLARY BUD.

CASE
Cast silver case in the form of a fritillary flower bud, with integral back and hinged solid lid. The whole case is engraved in a chequered pattern with alternate squares in-filled with niello. One area has suffered serious damage which has been repaired by the addition of a silver patch on the inside. Cast silver pendant. Steel finial badly deformed. On the inside of the lid an engraved wreath.

DIAL
Silver dial plate engraved in the middle with a landscape, a river bounded on one side by a castle wall and on the other by a church. Engraved chapter-ring with Roman hour numerals I-XII and heart-shaped half-hour marks. Around the outside a scrolling foliate design with a winged cherub's head at the top and fruit at the bottom.

MOVEMENT
FRAME: Oval gilt-brass plates with four pierced Egyptian pillars, one now replaced in blued-steel. There is a potence-hole in the pillar-plate. Engraved decoration around the verge aperture. Riveted potence and counter-potence. Signed on the potence-plate.

MAINSPRING & SET-UP: Gilt-brass barrel with a flange at the lower end only and a domed boss on the base. Three-lobed dovetailed cap and a riveted hook in the barrel wall. The mainspring is a later replacement. The barrel arbor now has an added brass sleeve over the barrel section. Ratchet and click set-up with with a curved steel spring and brass ratchet wheel. The steel click has been re-filed, the ratchet wheel is probably a replacement.

FUSEE & STOP-WORK: Gilt-brass fusee with gut line and standard stop-work.

TRAIN: Three-wheel gilt-brass train, the second and contrate wheels each with three crossings and domed collets.

ESCAPEMENT: Verge escapement, the crown wheel runs between a riveted potence and counter-potence, the latter with a separate plug. Silver balance-cock pierced and engraved with a foliate design, pinned to a stud on the potence-plate.

MOTION WORK
A pinion of report on the extended great-wheel arbor drives a central dial wheel of brass.
