Bone plaque or button, circular with design of man (head missing) with legs turned up and joined to body by two interlaced animals; back holed.
Circular bone plaque or button, of plano-convex section, broken across the top where the front originally extended upwards in the form of a man's head. The front is carved in low relief within a plain border. The reverse is part hollowed out and laterally perforated to form a toggle-like attachment. The ornament consists of a man with his legs raised so that his feet are placed beneath his armpits. His body is double-contoured and filled with pelleting; both his shoulders and his hips are marked with spirals. The head is broken off and only the tip of his beard survives. Two snakes interlace with his limbs and his waist.

The Mammen-style treatment of the bearded figure on this plaque from the River Thames is a cross between the snake-bound man on the head of a 'thistle-brooch' from the Skaill hoard (Graham-Campbell, J. A. (1975-6): The Viking-age silver and gold hoards of Scandinavian character from Scotland, ‘Proceedings of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland’, cvii, fig. 3; cp. Silver brooch terminal from Edinburgh (National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland): IL 5) and a carved and painted wooden figure found in the north mound at Jelling, together with another in the form of an openwork tendril pattern (Wilson and Klindt-Jensen 1966, pls 1-li).
Date: Late Viking Period.
