Goblet with six spouts
c. 1590
Applied panel with the monogram ‘HH’
Baluster vessel on a turned hollow pedestal foot, with a convex neck and six ‘puzzle’ spouts. Dark grey stoneware, the surface with a dark brown wash and cobalt-blue overpainting under an overall salt-glaze.
Applied around the central baluster section with a panel frieze moulded in low relief with Landsknecht soldiers within an arcade (the columns with caryatids), the drum of one of the figures with the monogram ‘HH’; the neck carved with vertical diaper (Kerbschnitt); and the pedestal foot with applied lion-masks in high relief on central raised cordon.

It is possible that ‘HH‘ may be his father or grandfather. Otherwise the monogram may belong to the Siegburg potter Hans Hilgers working c. 1569-95 (see von Falke, O. 1908, Das Rheinische Steinzeug (2 volumes), Berlin (reprint Osnabrück 1997), I, 127-36; Treptow, O. 1991b, ‘Miscellen zu verschiedenen Persönlichkeiten der Siegburger Ulnerzunft im späten 16. und zu Beginn des 17.
