Stoneware, jug; grey; turned base; narrow-necked; ovoid body; lipped-rim; pewter lid-mount; strap handle, scrolled handle terminal; cobalt blue decoration; manganese-purple glaze; slight funnel-neck - applied frontal grotesque mask; body - front - large octagonal applied medallion framing coat of arms of Ludwig Franz Graf zu Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg in relief (Gaimster 1997: arms of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Hohenstein), cobalt-blue; by radiating triangular palmettes; panel - framed by applied wreath of rosettes, circular stamps; sides - applied belt, repeating lion masks; flanked by triangular stamps, stylised palmettes, internal floral ornament.

Jug
c. 1650-75
Oval ‘star’ jug (Sternkrug) with turned flat base, narrow neck with pulled lip and strap handle with scrolled terminal. Flat pewter lid with scallop-shell thumbpiece. Salt-glazed light grey stoneware with cobalt-blue and manganese painted decoration under the glaze.
Applied on the front with a large octagonal armorial medallion moulded with the arms of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Hohenstein. The medallion is framed by a wreath of applied rosettes and circular stamps, in turn surrounded by radiating triangular palmettes in the form of a star, which are repeated in a double band around the diameter of the body; along the centre of the band a series of applied lion-masks in high relief. The grotesque lion-mask.
