- Curator's comments
- The British Museum register for July 14th 1854 shows that this sheet fragment was part of the Cooke collection, which also included objects from the 'Dowris hoard' (which were registered as such on the same day), but gives no indication of its provenance. Leeds includes this cauldron fragment in his schedule of bronze cauldrons (1930, no. 31) as from 'Dowris, Whigsborough?', possibly because it belonged to the Cooke collection. Eogan (1983, 133-4, no. 109) included the fragment as part of the Dowris hoard, citing Leeds, but noted that 'it is difficult, if not impossible, to ascertain the exact number of objects [belonging to the Dowris hoard]' (1983, 118). Given the unsatisfactory recording of the material prior to 1854, it is uncertain whether this sheet fragment originally belonged to the Dowris hoard but Gerloff (2010, 157) notes that as Cooke 'collected in Ireland and the adjacent material in the [British Museum] Accession Register is from Ireland, it is reasonable to assume that this piece is also from Ireland'.
