Stoneware 'Bartmann' type jug; globular; overall mottled, thin, brown iron wash; speckled salt-glaze over grey fabric on upper body; underside of base with wire-marks; strap-handle, cordoned neck with 'bartmann' mask; centre - oval medallion, rose, crown, heart type.

Bottle
c. 1650
According to the 1853 acquisition details the bottle was salvaged from the wreck site of the Dutch ship Haarlem, lost in Table Bay, Cape of Good Hope, South Africa, c. 1648.
Bulbous form with neck-cordons and strap handle. Buff-grey stoneware, the surface with a patchy brown iron wash under a speckled salt-glaze; streaks of wash on lower body. The underside of the base with widely spaced wire-marks.
Applied on the neck with a moulded grotesque bearded facemask; and on the body with an oval medallion moulded with a crowned heart.

G. 1963, ‘A mid-17th century group from the Parsonage House’, in E. W. Holden, ‘Excavations at the deserted medieval village of Hangleton, Pt 1’, Sussex Archaeological Collections, 101, 54-182, nos 255, 257).
