- Curator's comments
- Label inside rings reads 'Ashwell', possibly for Ashwell in Hertfordshire or Ashwell near Oakham, Rutland. Hertfordshire is more likely since the finds sold by Campkin to the BM were mainly from Cambridgeshire and Essex.
For similar rings found under the Treasure Act, see:
2006 T506 from Walsham area, Norfolk (Annual Report p. 153, no. 734, by E. Darch as 16th century, not illustrated);
2006 T528 from Buckinghamshire (Annual Report 2005/6, p. 120, no. 435 by J. Robinson as early 16th century, ill. p. 356); and another from Wiltshire submitted in November 2006;
2008 T486 from Buckinghamshire (Annual Report p. 162-3, no. 365, ill. p. 347, by R. Tyrell as 1500-1525, with a cluster of punched rings inside);
2010 T638 from Linton, Kent, with unidentified mark inside, perhaps an eagle;
2010 T 304 from Runfold, Surrey, with similar punched rings inside to those on 2008 T486.
2012 T606 (with incised V-shapes);
2012 T799 (with diagonal incised bands).
Rings of this type are generally dated to the late 15th or early 16th century. The punched rings inside 2008 T486 and 2010 T304 are probbly trial punches for the pattern on the exterior.
