The compass needle and glass are missing, and the box is marked for N12°W. Sixteen compass points identified by their German initials are marked on a silvered ring surrounding the box; this is surrounded in turn by a ring of simple floral and leafy sprays. The plummet holder and its spring are silvered and engraved. On the base of the box the names and latitudes of five towns are inscribed.
