'Townley refers in his accounts to the same artist variously as 'Pacilli's scholar', 'Vincenzo', or 'Vincenzo Pacetti'...Pacetti was employed on several occasions by Townley as a draughtsman to record sculptures...either things [he]...purchased...or...that he had seen whilst in Rome...This is one of a group of drawings, all of sculptures in the Vatican, commissioned by Townley from Pacetti during [his]...final visit to Rome. An entry in Townley's Account book reads: 9 April 1777 to Vincenzo Pacetti for drawings from heads and figures in the new Vatican Museum.'
