Curator's comments
For other examples of this type, some with Egyptian hieroglyphs, see Matthäus 1985, 226-7. His no. 522 is also from the Lawrence-Cesnola collection and said to come from Salamis, which may have been the findspot of the present example, though this cannot be verified. Examples with assured provenance are found in graves (Amathus Tomb 189 of the Department of Antiquities excavations in 1980) and shrines (Apollo Hylates at Kourion). The Amathus example was found in a CA II assemblage, but the type cannot be dated more closley than the Cypro-Archaic period.
