Title
Series:
The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus
Description
Fragment of one of the marble friezes (either Amazon's or Centaur's) showing part of an equine left forearm between the elbow and the knee, carved in the round and set to left. A smooth flat surface at the right is apparently the edge of the slab. If this is so, the leg must have been attached to the background only at the level of the hoof. It seems extraordinary to have a piece of sculpture carved free of the background at the end of the slab where it would have been very vulnerable during movement of the slab, unless the carving were done in situ.
