Body sherd of Chian Simple Animal Style pottery chalice; white slip; interior glazed streaky black; part of lotus flower in added white outline above two white bands; exterior: painted decoration consisting of sphinx (trace of hair spiral, hair and wing with added red patch remaining) to right.

- According to Lemos, sphinxes depicted on Simple Animal Style vases are usually facing left. Those facing right are probably part of an antithetical composition of confronting sphinxes.
If this sherd is part of an antithetical composition, then the vessel should belong in the Group of Antithetical Sphinxes. Sherds in this group are stylistically early.
